I/ Muang Khua - Visitors' opinions about Muang Khua, Laos
The town is nestled perfectly along the Nam Ou River within the lush Lao jungle. It is quaint, quiet, and extremely local. We had yet to be in a town like this, it was exactly what we had been looking for (especially after touristy-ass Vietnam).
The picturesque hanging bridge was the icing on the cake. The bridge was suspended at least 50 meters off the water and connected both sides of town. We walked across and back looking for somewhere to stay. Alas, we found a place…exactly where we got dropped off in the first place.
We hit the local market to find some noodle soup. It was not hard to spot. The soup was a nice change from Pho; simple, but with plenty of spicy chili to be added. We got into a long conversation with an older French man who had been on our bus. He may be the real life version of “ The Most Interesting Man in the World”. He shared stories of his 14 years traveling the world…straight; living with pygmies for 7 years in Africa, getting held at gunpoint by drug lords in northern Colombia, and meeting his Brazilian wife. He’s still going strong, traveling nine months out of every year. Something to aspire towards, perhaps.
After wandering for a bit, we heard horrible karaoke coming from a distant bar. The screeching sounds drew us in like sirens. What we found was a rickety, but large bar built entirely from bamboo. It was an open air bar situated right on a hill overlooking the confluence of the Nam Ou River and a smaller tributary. The situation escalated quickly. Before we knew it, we were singing Lao songs, dancing, and chugging small cups of beer with a local family. There were probably ten of them, they were the only ones in the bar and were running the show (one of them must have owned it). They were so drunk and killing it. We shared beer, they fed us some bamboo, and we were all merry.
We debated staying in Muang Khua to go on some treks and and enjoy the river but figured that’s exactly what we’d be doing in the next two villages we’d be visiting.
II/ How to get from Muang Khua to other attractions?

III. Slow Boat from Muang Khua to Nong Khiaw

- The slow boat leaves Muang Khua around 10am, and arrives in Nong Khiaw around 4pm.
- You can buy your ticket on the dock in the morning. It’s recommended you arrive at 9:30am at the latest, 9am is better.
- You can pick up take-away breakfast and (real) coffee from Sabaidee up the road.
- Pack a lunch!! There’s no lunch stop on the boat, so you’ll arrive in Nong Khiaw hungry if you don’t have lunch or ample snacks.
- Pack lots of water!! (see above)
- We did stop to let people on and off along the way, so you’ll have the chance to go to the toilet (in the bushes) if you need.
- Layer your clothes. It’s cold and windy in the morning and hot in the afternoon.
- Wear sunscreen & sunglasses, especially if you end up on the side of the boat with the sun beating down in the afternoon.
- The boat is squishy, so be prepared to sit cross legged, or hugging your knees for most of the day.
- If you want a more comfortable journey, it’s possible to pay more for a private boat. A 6-person boat (with comfortable seats) cost 1,300,000 kip ($216 CAD). We didn’t go this route, but you’d need to book the private boat the night before. There’s a phone number for Mr. Khaek, just call him and I’m sure he’ll be happy to arrange it!
- Boat Muang Khua to Nong Khiaw: 120,000 kip ($20 CAD) each, kids half price (although we paid an extra 20,000kip somehow!)
- Guesthouse in Nong Khiaw: 80,000 kip ($12 CAD) for a double room. This would be 60,000 kip ($10 CAD) if you only needed one bed.
- Bus from Long Khiaw to Luang Prabang: 130,000kip each ($22 CAD) including drop off at our hotel in Luang Prabang. The kids were free.
